Admission:              EURO 3 (Members / Concessions)          EURO 6 (Non-members)

ABSTRACT
In the beginning, they were one. As the social division of labour
accelerated and knowledge advanced, philosophy and science diverged
further and further from each other, bringing us to the situation
today. All disciplines proliferate into sub-disciplines of sub-
disciplines. We know more and more about less and less. Who sees the
whole picture? The lecture will sketch the historical trajectory of
intellectual specialisation, its advantages and its disadvantages. It
will focus particularly on the need of science for philosophy an

Sunday, 6th First Sunday Meeting

Buswell's Hotel, Molesworth Street, Dublin 2
4pm-6pm

Do you make resolutions? Do you keep them? Frivolous, fun or a serious
attempt to improve your lifestyle or make the world a better place?
How about making a Humanist resolution: come to more meetings; set up
a local group; write letters or articles to Humanism Ireland; write to
the newspapers; become a member of the International Humanist and
Ethical Union; volunteer your services to the HAI; send ideas to the
Board; find one new member; suggest speakers or topics for Sunday
meetings.

We look forward to a great 2008.

As always, to defray the cost of the room, the 'glass will be passed',
and we hope for the usual generous contributions. (We don't charge a
fixed fee so as not to deter those of limited means but appreciate it
from those who can).

Wednesday, 7th Irish Skeptics Society public meeting

Davenport Hotel, Merrion Square, Dublin 2
8.00pm

In their words:
"We have decided to alter the format from a formal lecture and to have a discussion on the topic of:
Addressing the God Question: are religion and skepticism mutually incompatible?
This is an area we have not considered previously although it has been discussed by skeptics groups elsewhere. The format of the evening will be as follows: Dr. Gary O'Reilly, School of Psychology, University College Dublin will introduce the topic with an overview of the issues. Dr. DonalO'Mathuna, a scientist, member of the Irish Skeptics society and a lecturer in the School of Nursing, Dublin City University will present a position paper from the perspective of a believer. Ms Ann James, Secretary of the Humanist Association of Ireland will present a position paper from the perspective of a non-believer. Following the presentations Mr. Paul O'Donoghue of the ISS will chair a discussion with audience participation.
We look forward to a lively debate and a large turnout on the night.
As usual entry fee is €3 for members and concessions and €6 for non-members".

Hopefully there’ll be a good turnout of HAI members to support this meeting, a slightly different meeting for the ISS.

June 2008

Sunday, 1st First Sunday Meeting

Buswell's Hotel, Molesworth Street, Dublin 2
4pm-6pm

Late update! We revised this entry yesterday as we though Ruth Yeo would be unable to attend. Today we are delighted to announce that Ruth Yeo will be able to attend after all! So the topic is again as it was previously advertised. If you would like to discuss any books or magazines of interest, please bring them along anyway.

Topic: Humanist Chaplaincy

Ruth Yeo from the Belfast Humanist Group last year became the first Humanist chaplain at Queen’s University in Belfast .

This is what the Belfast telegraph said: “Queen’s University, Belfast, has raised eyebrows after appointing as its latest chaplain someone who doesn’t believe in God. Peter Hutchison meets new cleric Ruth Yeo. For many people the term humanist chaplain will seem absurd. A contradiction in terms. Sacrilegious even. They may have a point. It is, after all, a philosophy, a way of life. It is not a religion, although humanists claim it can still be spiritual”.

Ruth will talk at the meeting about her experiences. It promises to be
an interesting meeting.

Wednesday, 4th Skeptics Society public lecture

8pm in the Gandon Suite South, Davenport Hotel, Merrion Square, Dublin 2

In their words:

We are delighted to have as our guest speaker, Evelyn Cusack, Meteorologist with Met Eireann and familiar to you all from RTE's weather service, to give a presentation entitled

Evelyn Cusack's guide to weather

Ms Cusack will address such topics as

How do we know what the weather was like hundreds of thousands of years ago? Is there really global warming? Are hurricanes really getting stronger? Is the Arctic ice really melting? What's the difference between rain and showers? Weather and climate? Can fauna and flora forecast the weather?

Is the southeast really the sunniest part of Ireland? The presentation will also include an overview of how scientific weather forecasts are made.

We hope you can join us for the evening,

As usual the entry fee is 3 euro for members and concessions and 6 euro for non members,

Noirin Buckley on behalf of the ISS  www.irishskeptics.net

July 2008

Sunday, 6th First Sunday Meeting

Buswell's Hotel, Molesworth Street, Dublin 2
4pm-6pm

Topic: TBD

August 2008

Sunday, 3rd First Sunday Meeting

Buswell's Hotel, Molesworth Street, Dublin 2
4pm-6pm

Topic: Recognition, equality and parity of esteem are essential for a modern
secular state. The HAI’s submission to the Dialogue with government
and related bodies outline areas where discrimination does occur. What
these bodies (eg Equality Authority) need to know is details of how
this affects non-religious in Ireland, so it’s important we can show
that, even if it’s subtle, there is prejudice and inequality. On
Sunday the session will give time to looking at any examples –sublime
to ridiculous! (There is no need for the individual to be identified
to the state bodies).
We can discuss the recent report on the situation in Ireland from the
UN Human Rights Committee under the International Covenant on Civil &
Political Rights.

As always at the meeting, time for lighter chat and information. If
you haven’t been before now is as good a time as any other to join us
there!
